In December, Dr. Ngukato Rochil, a surgeon from Nagaland who was working in Meghalaya came to visit our place after being informed about our need for doctors by Sungtis’ brother-in-law. When he came he mentioned he was just doing his uncle a favour and wasn’t seriously considering moving up to this remote area with his wife and one year-old daughter. However, when he came and saw what we were doing here at the hospital and campus, he got really excited to come and join us! So we were quite taken aback, when they called in January this year and informed us they were coming – we weren’t at all prepared! They both resigned from their government jobs and packed all their things and moved here on the 22nd of Feburary 2025. Since the 1st of March they have started working and already the hospital seems a lot busier. Dr. Sonia (Ngukatos’ wife) is from Arunachal Pradesh, she’s a gynaecologist experienced in obstetrics and infertility treatments. We will be both working part-time seeing patients three days a week each and emergencies/ deliveries on our days off. This gives me some breathing space as trying to manage deliveries, surgeries, rounds and seeing out-patients has been very exhausting.
